Basic Admission Requirements
For bachelor’s programs, German universities check whether your high school diploma grants direct access to higher education in Germany. For technical programs, three sets of requirements are most often important:

Studienkolleg for Technical Fields of Study
The Studienkolleg is a preparatory year for applicants whose prior education does not grant direct admission to a German bachelor’s program. For technical fields, the T-Kurs is most often required. It prepares students for engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and other technical programs.
The Studienkolleg offers a variety of courses:
- T-Kurs — technical, mathematical, and natural science fields;
- W-Kurs — economics and socio-economic programs;
- M-Kurs — medicine, biology, pharmacy, and related fields;
- G-Kurs — humanities majors;
- S-Kurs — language programs.
Entrance exams for the T-Kurs typically test German and mathematics. Mathematics is also often required for the W-Kurs, and natural sciences may be tested for the M-Kurs. The specific set of exams is determined by the Studienkolleg, so you should check its website rather than relying on general descriptions found online.
German or English
German-language technical programs often require the DSH, TestDaF, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, or another certificate from the specific university’s list. You cannot assume that the Goethe C1 will automatically be accepted everywhere: some universities accept it only for certain programs or do not accept it at all.
The TestDaF remains a common option for admission, but it must also meet the program’s minimum score requirements. English-language programs typically require IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English, or a similar certificate. Sometimes a university may waive the language test if your previous education was conducted in the relevant language, but this must be confirmed with supporting documents.

TU9: Examples of Leading Technical Universities
TU9 is an association of Germany’s leading technical universities. It serves as a useful guide, but this does not mean you should apply only to these universities: there are strong engineering programs outside the TU9 as well.
Technische Universität München (TUM)
TUM offers programs in engineering, computer science, natural sciences, medicine, management, and technology. For international students from countries outside the EU/EEA, TUM has introduced tuition fees for many programs starting in the winter semester of 2024/25. The amount depends on the degree level and program, so be sure to check the specific program page and the “Tuition Fees” section on the TUM website before applying.
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
KIT in Karlsruhe is known for its engineering, IT, energy, and natural sciences programs. Prospective students should check the regulations of the state of Baden-Württemberg separately: in this state, some international students from countries outside the EU/EEA are required to pay tuition fees at public universities.
