Super E10 in Germany is 95 ROZ petrol with up to 10% bioethanol. It is sold at regular petrol stations alongside Super E5 and Super Plus, but it is not suitable for every car. The basic rule is simple: if the manufacturer approves E10 for your engine, you can use it all the time, alternate it with E5, and mix both in the same tank.

What the E10 label means

The letter E stands for ethanol, and the number shows the maximum possible share of ethanol in the petrol. Super E10 can contain up to 10% bioethanol. The familiar Super E5 can also contain up to 5% ethanol, so E5 is not “pure” petrol without additives.

At the pump, E10 is usually marked with a round E10 label and the octane rating 95. This matters: E10 is not a substitute for Super Plus. If your car manual says it needs at least 98 ROZ, you should go by the octane rating first, not just the ethanol percentage.

Who can use E10

For most modern petrol cars, E10 is a standard fuel. DAT gives a general rule: all petrol cars offered for sale in Germany since 2012 are compatible with E10. For older models, you need to check approval separately.

Reliable ways to check:

  • the owner’s manual;
  • a sticker or marking inside the fuel filler flap;
  • the manufacturer’s official dealer or service center;
  • DAT’s compatibility list;

If the model is approved for E10, manufacturers and German reference services generally do not single out any extra risk of faster engine wear caused by E10 itself. If there is no approval or it is unclear, it is safer to choose E5 or Super Plus and confirm the information with the manufacturer.

When E10 is better avoided

Caution is advisable in several situations:

  • an older petrol car without confirmed approval;
  • a motorcycle, scooter, boat engine, generator, or garden equipment;
  • a car that requires Super Plus 98 ROZ according to the manual;
  • a rare, tuned, or collectible car where the manufacturer does not give a clear answer;
  • long-term fuel storage in small equipment if the manufacturer does not allow E10.

There is no universal rule for small petrol-powered equipment. Even if a car runs fine on E10, that does not mean the same fuel is suitable for a lawn mower or boat engine.

Price and consumption: is there any saving

E10 in Germany is usually sold cheaper than Super E5 and Super Plus. Fuel prices change daily, so locking a single price per liter into the article quickly becomes pointless. In practice, it is more useful to look at the price difference at a specific petrol station on the day you fill up.

Ethanol has lower energy density, so fuel consumption on E10 can theoretically be slightly higher. ADAC gives a rough benchmark of about 1-1.5% based on tests and says the financial benefit usually remains if E10 is noticeably cheaper than E5. In real driving, the difference can be outweighed by driving style, speed, tyres, temperature, and route.

Practical takeaway for drivers: if your car is approved for E10, compare the current price of E10 and E5. With a typical difference of a few cents per liter, E10 often remains the cheaper option, but the exact result depends on your car and fuel consumption.

Current petrol prices in Germany are best checked day by day and station by station: the time you refuel and nearby competition often save more money than the choice between E5 and E10.

E5, E10, and Super Plus: what to choose

The difference between the fuel grades looks like this:

E5 does not give a technical advantage to a car that is officially approved for E10. Super Plus should not be seen as automatically “better fuel” for everyone either: if the engine is designed for 95 ROZ, the extra cost often has no practical point.

What to do if you filled up with E10 by mistake

If the car is not approved for E10 or compatibility is unknown, act carefully:

  1. Do not continue the trip unless necessary, especially if the tank is almost full.
  2. Check the manual, the fuel filler flap, and the DAT list.
  3. Call the manufacturer’s service or a garage.
  4. If only a small amount of E10 was added, it may sometimes be enough to dilute it with fuel containing less ethanol, but this should be confirmed for the specific model.
  5. If the tank is almost full, the fuel may need to be pumped out.

For a car with official approval, nothing special needs to be done: E10 and E5 can be mixed.

The environmental point of E10

The idea behind E10 is to replace part of fossil petrol with a biogenic component without rebuilding the existing vehicle fleet. Under German and EU rules, biofuel counted toward climate quotas must meet sustainability criteria and deliver the required greenhouse gas savings over its life cycle.

But E10 should not be presented as a universal climate solution. Biofuels have controversial sides: agricultural feedstocks, competition for land, and the risk of indirect land-use change. For this reason, the German environmental authority evaluates biofuels in a differentiated way: the feedstock, origin, and actual sustainability of the supply chain all matter.

Put simply, E10 is a compromise for petrol cars that already exist. It can reduce the share of fossil fuel and save a little money, but it does not replace more effective solutions such as driving less, public transport, or electrification where those options fit.

The situation on the German market

E10 has been allowed in Germany since late 2010 and has long been a regular fuel grade. At the same time, E5 continues to be sold: German rules require suppliers to keep petrol available for cars that are not confirmed as E10-compatible. According to the federal environmental authority’s FAQ, that obligation applies indefinitely unless the regulation changes.

According to the latest full market data for 2024, Super E10’s share of petrol sales rose to 27.4%, but E5 remained the more common choice. So E10 can no longer be seen as a niche product, but it has not yet become the market standard either.

Discussions about fuel with a higher ethanol share, for example E20, are separate. For ordinary drivers in Germany, E20 is not yet a standard mass-market grade at the pump: before it can be sold freely, standards, compatibility, and clear manufacturer approvals are needed.
