Die Techniker, or TK, is one of Germany’s largest statutory health-insurance funds. Employees, students, families, and new immigrants often consider it when they need a statutory German health-insurance fund with nationwide cover, strong online services, and clear support. When choosing, it is important to look beyond the brand’s popularity and consider the current Zusatzbeitrag, the additional benefits available, ease of communication, and the terms of bonus tariffs.

Why TK is often chosen in Germany

Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. Most residents are insured through the GKV system, but they can usually choose their particular fund: Techniker Krankenkasse, Barmer, AOK, DAK-Gesundheit, HEK, hkk, and others. TK stands out because it operates nationwide and is not tied to one federal state.

This is convenient for immigrants for several reasons:

  • you can move from one federal state to another without having to change funds just because of the region;
  • many documents for an employer, university, or authority can be obtained through the online account;
  • the website and some services are available in German and English;
  • TK offers an app, an electronic mailbox, and digital document submission;
  • insured people can use standard GKV infrastructure: doctors with Kassenzulassung, the eGK, eRezept, ePA, and standard preventive services.

TK is not a “premium private insurance” provider, however. It is a standard statutory fund: the basic rights and mandatory GKV benefits are set by law, while differences between funds more often concern service, additional programmes, bonuses, digital tools, and the individual Zusatzbeitrag.

TK contributions in 2026

The GKV contribution has two parts:

  1. Allgemeiner Beitragssatz — the statutory general health-insurance contribution. For most insured people entitled to Krankengeld, it is 14.6% of beitragspflichtiges Einkommen.
  2. Zusatzbeitrag — an additional contribution set by the individual Krankenkasse. The fund sets it itself, and current rates are published by GKV-Spitzenverband.

In 2026, the GKV-Spitzenverband list gives Techniker Krankenkasse a 2.69% Zusatzbeitrag. For employees, the general contribution and Zusatzbeitrag are usually split equally between employee and employer. The calculation may differ for students, pensioners, self-employed people, and voluntarily insured people, so they should check their category separately.

Do not choose a fund solely by its contribution percentage. The difference in Zusatzbeitrag matters, but in practice you should also consider:

  • how quickly the fund responds to requests;
  • whether it is easy to send documents online;
  • which additional preventive and family benefits you actually need;
  • whether suitable bonus programmes are available;
  • how clear the rules are for sick leave, studies, moving, or changing employer.

What TK covers as a statutory fund

TK’s basic GKV cover follows the same logic as that of other statutory funds. It generally includes:

  • appointments with doctors and specialists who work with gesetzliche Krankenkassen;
  • hospital treatment where medically indicated;
  • prescription medicines with the statutory co-payments;
  • electronic prescriptions and use of the electronic health card;
  • preventive check-ups, vaccinations, and screenings under GKV rules;
  • maternity care and childbirth;
  • sick leave and electronic Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung in applicable cases;
  • some dental services under GKV rules;
  • Hilfsmittel and Heilmittel when prescribed and approved under the insurance rules.

The exact coverage depends on the diagnosis, doctor’s prescription, the insured person’s age and status, and GKV rules. For costly treatment, rehabilitation, Hilfsmittel, psychotherapy, pregnancy, disability, or a disputed medical service, it is best to ask TK for written confirmation in advance.

Online services: TK-App, Meine TK, and TK-Safe

One reason for TK’s popularity is its advanced digital services. Depending on your account status and identity verification through the app or Meine TK, you can:

  • send documents and applications to the fund;
  • receive letters from TK in an electronic mailbox;
  • download certificates for an employer, educational institution, or authority;
  • manage some personal details;
  • submit confirmations for the bonus programme;
  • view selected information about medicines, prescriptions, and medical documents;
  • use TK-Safe as a digital store for medical data if the service is activated.

This is particularly useful for new residents during their first months in Germany: proof of insurance is often needed by an employer, university, Ausländerbehörde, or another organisation. The digital account does not completely replace paper mail, though; some decisions and official notices may still arrive by post.

Support and advice

TK offers advice by telephone, through its app and online account, and at customer centres. For simple questions, the hotline or a message in Meine TK is usually enough. In complicated cases, it is better to phrase the request in writing so that you receive an answer you can keep.

Useful points to clarify before joining:

  • whether advice is available in English or another language you need;
  • which documents are required for your status: work, studies, Ausbildung, self-employment, or family insurance;
  • how quickly a Mitgliedsbescheinigung is issued;
  • what to do if you move, change employer, or change university;
  • how to submit family-insurance documents for a spouse or children.

Russian-language support may not always be available or offered through every channel. It is safer to rely on German or English and to keep written answers for legally important questions.

TK-Bonus: how the bonus programme works

TK-Bonus is a programme in which insured people receive bonuses for prevention and health-related activities. It generally recognises confirmed activities such as a preventive check-up, vaccination, dental check-up, membership of a sports club, health courses, or activities through TK-Fit.

The general process is:

  1. The participant registers for TK-Bonus through the app, Meine TK, or another official channel.
  2. They collect confirmations during their bonus period.
  3. They upload documents: certificates, invoices, participation certificates, and other confirmations.
  4. They choose a payment or increased reimbursement for health-related expenses if that option is available under the current terms.

The original programme terms have included amounts such as 1,000 bonus points for individual activities and various ways to exchange them for money or a Gesundheitsdividende. These rules may change, so check the current TK-Bonus terms in the app or on the TK website before calculating any benefit. It is safer to view the bonus programme as a pleasant extra rather than a guaranteed source of savings.

Wahltarife and cashback: where caution is needed

TK offers elective tariffs that may provide a premium or partial refund when an insured person behaves in a certain way. The original article mentioned TK-PrämieFlex and TK-Tarif 300Plus. Such tariffs should not be judged only by the promised premium: they are usually linked to terms, exclusions, Selbstbehalt, minimum participation periods, and possible financial liability when services are used.

Before joining any Wahltarif, check:

  • who can participate: the main insured person, a student, a self-employed person, or a family-insurance member;
  • whether there is a minimum income or other restrictions;
  • how long you are committed to the tariff;
  • which services do not affect the premium and which reduce the benefit;
  • the maximum possible Selbstbehalt;
  • whether you can cancel the tariff if the Zusatzbeitrag increases or your circumstances change.

If you visit doctors frequently, are planning surgery, pregnancy, dental treatment, rehabilitation, or already use regular therapy, a Wahltarif with an excess may be unprofitable. Join one only after reading TK’s current terms and, where necessary, receiving a written answer from the fund.

TK for families

For families, TK is of interest primarily because of the possibility of beitragsfreie Familienversicherung. If a spouse or child meets the income, residence, and insurance-status requirements, they can be included in the main member’s insurance without a separate GKV contribution.

What to check:

  • the spouse’s or partner’s income;
  • Minijob, self-employment, or study status;
  • the child’s age and type of education;
  • whether one parent has private insurance;
  • registration address and the documents the fund will request.

If the family includes disability, chronic illness, Hilfsmittel, therapy, or regular prescriptions, clarify in advance how existing decisions and payments will transfer when changing funds. This is especially important for people with disabilities and families whose costly aids or treatment have already been approved.

TK for students and new immigrants

Students, employees, and many people arriving on a work or student visa need clear insurance from the outset. TK is often chosen for its quick digital application process and communication familiar to immigrants, but the terms depend on your status.

Before applying, prepare:

  • your passport and German address, if you already have one;
  • details of your employer, university, or Ausbildung;
  • the work or study start date;
  • information about previous insurance;
  • family-insurance documents if you need to include a spouse or children.

Proof of insurance is often required for a visa, university, or employer. The required format depends on the purpose: a university may receive a digital notification from the fund, while an employer needs information for Sozialversicherung.

TK’s advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • a nationwide fund available throughout Germany;
  • strong digital services and app;
  • convenient document submission through Meine TK;
  • a clear structure for employees, students, and families;
  • a bonus programme and additional preventive options;
  • a large customer base and experience with different groups of insured people.

Limitations

  • the Zusatzbeitrag changes and may not be the lowest on the market;
  • not all additional services are paid automatically;
  • some bonuses and Wahltarife require careful reading of the terms;
  • Russian-language support is not guaranteed;
  • disputed or costly services are best agreed in writing beforehand.

How to choose: TK or another Krankenkasse

TK is worth considering if digital services, nationwide availability, clear communication, and a stable large fund matter to you. But if your main criterion is the lowest Zusatzbeitrag, compare several funds using the GKV-Spitzenverband list.

A practical selection process:

  1. Check whether your status allows you to be in GKV.
  2. Compare the Zusatzbeitrag of relevant funds.
  3. List three to five additional services you actually need: family insurance, dental care, pregnancy, prevention, sport, psychotherapy, or Hilfsmittel.
  4. Check the app and communication channels.
  5. Do not join a Wahltarif until you understand the Selbstbehalt and commitment period.
  6. For complex medical circumstances, ask the fund a written question before switching.

FAQ

Is TK statutory or private insurance?

TK is a statutory health-insurance fund in the GKV system. It is not private Krankenversicherung, although TK members may have separate private Zusatzversicherungen with other insurers.

Can I join TK before arriving in Germany?

In many cases you can start an application in advance, but insurance is usually tied to a specific status: employment, studies, place of residence, or another basis. For a visa and university, clarify which type of confirmation is required.

Do I need to change TK when moving to another federal state?

Usually not, because TK operates throughout Germany. You do need to update your address and employer in good time.

Does TK pay for all treatment?

No. Like any GKV fund, TK pays for services under gesetzliche Krankenversicherung rules. Some services involve co-payments, prior approval, restrictions, or medical indications.

Is it worth joining a cashback tariff?

Only after checking the current terms. If a tariff is linked to a Selbstbehalt or to giving up some additional benefits, its value depends on how often you need medical care.
